How is Adhesive Case Binding Done?

Adhesive case binding is done in the following steps:

  • The interior pages are printed and cut into book blocks.
  • The case is created by wrapping boards with various materials. Choices of materials include a paper wrap printed with your design, cloth, or faux leather materials. Those materials can be embellished if you desire.
  • Page count: The number of pages for case bound books is divisible by two when printing digitally.
  • Cloth is added to reinforce the spine and glued to the case.
  • The glue is applied to the endpapers and spine board then the book block is pressed into the case, ensuring proper spine alignment.
  • The book is allowed to dry and the adhesive is cured. This helps ensure a durable binding.
  • Next, the book is inspected for any imperfections or defects before it is packaged for shipping.

Design Considerations for Adhesive Case Binding

The following are some common design considerations for adhesive case binding and printing of books.

  • Interior pages: Be sure to adjust bind margins appropriately for ease of reading. Please ensure that any vital content is further than 1/2” from the bind on interior pages.
  • Use master pages to ensure consistent placement of repeating elements such as running heads, folios, and design elements.
  • Endsheets can be eye-catching when using either Rainbow brand solid colors, or printed with your design to suit the book’s overall theme or tone. Other choices are cream or white to match the interior paper stock you’ve picked.
  • The cover design of the hardcover book is printed on a single sheet. This cover design is glued to the three boards of the book. The book’s spine width is calculated based on the text stock and page count of the book. • Adding a dust jacket to the hardcover book will give it an extra-professional feel and provides a layer of protection.
  • Hiring a professional designer that specializes in book design is wise. A list of our preferred providers can be found at www.tps1.com under the Resources tab.
  • Adhesive case binding is suited for various types of books, including coffee-table books, art books, cookbooks, first or special editions, compendia, academic books, yearbooks, high-end luxury catalogs, textbooks, memoirs and history books.
